Kristen's Trip to Uganda - Fall 2012 - Part 6
Friday, Oct 12 - Kristen
Watuvamu Monic and Tabuza Prossy are two sonographers who were sent by ITW for advanced ultrasound training at ECUREI (The Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute) in Kampala, Uganda. They now work at an ITW “hub”, Kamuli Mission Hospital, where they perform quality assurance for the program by peer-reviewing ultrasound cases. That is, they review ultrasound interpretations that have already been completed by interpreters in Uganda for agreement…a secondary read. This is possible because the images are sent securely over the cellular network to the internet for interpretation and are available for users in the program to review for quality assurance from anywhere…Uganda, the USA, etc. Patient confidentiality is maintained because there is no identifying information on the images – all mothers are given an “ITW number” that identifies only the name of the clinic and a randomly selected number. Patient information matching the numbers is available in a secure place only at the health unit of origin. The transmission of images is secure and the project meets USA HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy Rule standards.
