New ultrasound equipment in Malawi put to immediate use
Imaging the World recently donated a portable state-of-the-art ultrasound unit to the Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care in Malawi. The gift, which was made in partnership with Warm Hearts Foundation, was quickly put to use to treat a potentially life-threatening bowel condition in a young boy. The child (and mother) are now happy and healthy.
The boy came into the hospital in Malawi with abdominal pain. The donated ultrasound system showed intussusception, which is a condition where the intestine slides over itself like a telescope and causes an obstruction. The visiting pediatric radiologist was able to do a warm water enema, with guidance from the ultrasound, that opened up the obstruction. This saved the boy complicated surgery and probably saved his life.
The Imaging the World team is excited to be heading to Malawi this July to expand ITW’s ultrasound programs in Malawi.
